If you want to get noticed and make a lasting impression, you have to figure out a way to be seen as a human people can trust.
The truth is, no matter how many stats you can share about your accomplishments or how many facts you list out on your resume about your qualifications, stats and facts will never have the same weight and the same power as a really well-told story.
When the brain hears a story, it releases a hormone called oxytocin, the empathy hormone. It immediately relaxes the body and makes people more receptive to information. Many years ago, I read about a study that showed that people are 85% more likely to respond positively to a call to action related to the story being told when blood is flooded with oxytocin.
Many studies have shown that the easiest and quickest way to build rapport and trust with a stranger is with a video. There’s true power to reading a story and hearing and seeing the story. Video eliminates the personal spin someone might put on a story that they read. When you use video to tell your story, you control the narrative.
Why am I rambling on about storytelling and calls to action? When a company posts a job, they do so because they’ve realized that they need help solving a problem. So this is the perfect scenario to come in and show them why you’re the person who can solve their problem.
So the question I usually get after I’ve told someone they should consider storytelling for their personal brand is: How do I know what story to tell? I don’t feel comfortable sharing my life’s story, and my career story is full of trauma and experiences that I don’t necessarily want to put on blast. And I get it! You don’t have to share the parts of your story you’re not comfortable sharing, but you should be prepared to share stories that are:
Trust is built with authenticity and transparency.
That’s why it’s important to master storytelling if you want to be successful in your career. You’ll use stories to attract candidates and customers, land speaking engagements, get promoted, and build trust. You get the drift.
So, What’s your story? 🤔
Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to start thinking about your story:
➡️ Who are you?
➡️ Why are you doing the type of work that you do?
➡️ What would happen if you weren’t doing this type of work?
➡️ What would the world be missing out on?
➡️ Why are you doing this type of work NOW?
