How to Approach Diversity Hiring in 2024

If you’ve been paying attention to the legal and political landscape, you’ve probably noticed that in 2023, certain groups tried to come for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts. Some people have gone as far as to say that DEI is dying, but they’re wrong, especially when it comes to diversity hiring.

Every day, you can see a post pop up on your social media feed about how we must stop trying to hire specific races or genders. And while these posts get social media attention, and there’s definitely a portion of society that believes this, they’re missing a few key things:

  • Diversity Hiring is not about checking boxes and hiring a specific demographic, whether they have the skills or not.
  • 70% of job seekers want to work for a company committed to diversity and Inclusion.
  • Companies with strong DEI policies attract diverse talent and tend to be more profitable and innovative.

Despite political pressures, companies are still committed to DEI.

In 2023, more companies went public with their DEI data and goals. But we also saw a slowdown in DEI momentum. Some of the factors that contributed to this slowdown include:

  • Economic uncertainty
  • Increasing politicization of diversity-related topics
  • General “fatigue” 🙄

Concerns over legal risks and political backlash have led some companies to de-emphasize DEI data and analytics in their efforts.

In 2024, it’s more important than ever to approach Diversity Hiring Strategically.

As Talent Acquisition professionals, 2024 will be a challenging year as we balance the needs of job seekers with the internal pressure from executives and Legal to mitigate legal risk by de-prioritizing DEI.

I’m not an expert in DEI, so I reached out to my former manager and friend, Tara Turk-Haynes, and had an honest conversation about where we are headed and how we can align internally on Diversity Hiring. We spoke about:

  • Facilitating political conversations at work.
  • How to Retain Diverse Talent
  • How to start a career in DEI

I’ll release the full video on my new YouTube channel soon 👀, but you can read excerpts of the conversation on my blog.

Is Diversity Hiring still a priority for you and for your organization this year?

Would love to know your thoughts on this and any challenges your are facing. Hit reply and let me know.
